The Story of the Building at
108 Alfred Street

Built in 1914 by Alfred and Bella Louise Fraser after the original wooden building on site burnt down, this huge space includes upstairs living spaces, a small dark room where photos were once developed, a watchmaker's office and an outhouse and the site of the old outdoor shower.
Since being built the building has remained in the Fraser family until we purchased it in July 2020.
It was previously known as Fraser's Sports and Cycle, selling push bikes and sporting equipment as well as jewellery and giftware, and also offered watch repairs and engraving.

In the beginning... When we purchased the store in July 2020 it had been empty for 10 years. While it had been structurally maintained, it had at least 10 years of dust, cobwebs and emptiness built up inside and out. This is where we started...

The big cleanup... As soon as the power had been tested and declared safe, it was time to get to work! With a small but merry band of helpers we cleaned the front main shop, removed shelves that weren't needed and prepared it for painting. The remaining rooms were tackled as time allowed. In just six short weeks we were ready to open the doors!

In all her glory...

It turns out some pretty unique spaces were hiding underneath all that dust! The back shed is an amazing space, and we have big plans for galleries/workshops/events in it. Make sure you ask to see it when you pop in!

With the recent addition of brand new flooring, the back room has now been transformed into a functional space for sewing workshops, and a bathroom has been installed.

Pictured are some of the areas we have worked on so far. Rooms are tackled as time and money allows - there are plenty more to go!

So much space…

Apart from the main shop at the front, our building has a workshop, Watchmaker’s Office, darkroom (YES, to develop photos – check out the nostalgia wall in store to see copies of original photo envelopes, with early 1900’s photography tips!), and upstairs level where the Fraser family once resided.

Outside in the large backyard sits a historic shed, outhouse and beautiful peach tree which is heavily laden with ripe fruit in September.
